Interoperability is essential between company mainframes and information systems

As an essential component of their technological assets for more than 30 years, many large companies have fully understood the value of the applications and data contained in their mainframe platforms.

They have also understood that it is complex and very costly to migrate these applications or rewrite them, and that it is just as complex to duplicate this data into other environments (source of errors, the risk of losing consistency within the overall system, etc.).

There is a very real need to find new solutions that allow the interaction of their existing applications (transactions + databases) with their other environments, whether Intranet and Extranet (in particular by dynamically integrating them into their Web applications or portals).

However, the solutions sought by companies must be both simple to implement and upgradeable while also not further complicating any ongoing modernisation and homogenisation processes of their information systems.

In response to the integration concerns and requirements of companies, SysperTec provides a simple method for integrating large-system applications into a service-oriented architecture (SOA). In order to achieve this, SysperTec recommends the VIRTEL WEB Integration module which essentially makes use of HTTP and XML standards and is based on REST architecture style.

Integrating data and logical processes specific to the company

In order to facilitate SOA integration processes and initiatives, VIRTEL WEB Integration standardises exchanges between central site applications and other applications, both in terms of data and in terms of logical processes specific to the company.

VIRTEL WEB Integration is much more than a "passive" connector using the mainframe as a simple database:

About...

REST

WOA

It allows interactive, real-time use of host applications from a Web application.
To do this, it interprets XML flows and triggers transactions, the results of which are returned to the Web application.
It can therefore be called up in a fully transparent fashion from any point of the company's information system.

In order to achieve this, VIRTEL WEB Integration automates Commarea/XML and XML/Commarea conversions.

To summarise:

Technical environment

Platform:
z/Series, z/OS or OS/390,
MVS or VSE.

3270 applications:
Cobol, CICS or IMS, TSO etc.

TCP/IP

VIRTEL WEB Integration recognises and interprets the XML flows sent to it by Web applications, determines which application is responsible and transposes all or part of the XML into Commarea that is intelligible to the central site application.
In the other direction, VIRTEL WEB Integration automatically transforms the data produced from host transactions into XML standardised format in order to respond to the requests of Web applications or servers.

This automatic conversion feature, both for incoming and outgoing data, makes VIRTEL WEB Integration a powerful asset in facilitating the dynamic integration of data and applications from a central site.
In fact, these data and applications can be invoked as a simple Web Service by any application or server.
VIRTEL WEB Integration is also fully compatible with integration platforms such as WebSphere Application Server, .Net, J2EE, Weblogic etc.

VIRTEL WEB Integration therefore fully standardises exchanges between host applications and other applications, both in terms of data and transactions, making mainframes fully-fledged citizens of the Web.

This concept allows companies to make the most of existing applications and facilitates their integration into a service-oriented architecture (SOA) or Web-oriented architecture (WOA).

Optimisation of previous investments

As mainframe software, VIRTEL WEB acts both as a communication monitor and HTTP server installed directly on the mainframe platform. In this context, it benefits from the secure environment of the host, its processing power and ramp-up capacity.

By using the XML functions of the VIRTEL WEB Integration module to facilitate the integration of applications, companies are therefore able to preserve all the advantages inherent to this platform.
This also means they can avoid the proliferation of intermediate servers which would be necessary if an n-tier solution was used to support the volume of transaction and data exchanges.
VIRTEL WEB Integration is a non-intrusive solution that does not require applications to be rewritten on the host side, thus overcoming a significant concern of many companies.

Finally, from a strictly financial point of view, VIRTEL WEB Integration makes it possible to future-proof the significant investments already made in these mainframe architectures.

Upgrade mainframe applications
without adversely affecting your new applications

With VIRTEL WEB Integration, mainframe applications are made accessible from any Web application by natively communicating via standardised XML flows. There is no need for adaptation or specific dialogue as the mainframe environment blends in seamlessly with the general IT landscape.

VIRTEL WEB Integration allows implementation of a solution that integrates the transactions and data of central site applications, and does not require any mainframe expertise.
In terms of Web Services, developers formulate simple requests in the languages they are familiar with and do not need to worry about the specific features of the mainframe platform. Instead, they benefit from its power and robustness.

In addition, if mainframe applications are migrated or rewritten at a later date, this does not have any impact on the Web applications they interact with as the calling and exchange mode has already been standardised. VIRTEL WEB Integration also provides an undeniable advantage for companies that do not want to further invest in mainframes but still require an intermediate solution.

Advantages of the mainframe platform

Security of the platform.

Processing power and performance.

Reliability of tried and tested applications.

Outstanding technical architecture differentiating it from the competition

  • The performance of applications is unaffected.
  • Code is not modified or dispersed over several platforms.
  • No duplication of data.
  • No connector is necessary.
  • Security is ensured at several levels.

Real-time access to data and transactions

  • Mainframe applications, when used as Web Services, are capable of recognising external Web Services.
  • Automated generation of Web Services from mainframe applications, as well as from logical processes specific to the company (transactions and data) and from 3270 screens.
  • Identification of Web Services and associated XML flows followed by automatic conversion into Commarea that is intelligible to mainframe applications (and vice versa).

An approach that is future-oriented

  • The dialogue between central applications and Web applications uses HTTP, XML and Web Services standards.
  • The mainframe is integrated into SOA or WOA architectures.
  • The solution is easily replicable and does not restrict the development of Web applications.

Future-proofing of previous application investments

  • The opportunity of getting the best out of mainframe platforms.
  • Avoids migration of applications.
  • Applications become citizens of the Web.

Control of costs

  • No rewriting or modification of code.
  • Does not require intermediate servers.
  • Does not require the use of JAVA, thus avoiding memory and CPU inflation on the mainframe platform as well as associated software costs.
