FAQ
Answers to the most frequently asked technical questions about our software.
All software
I've changed IBM machines with a new CPU number. How does this impact my software?
There is no impact because Virtel, Virkix, and Synapse software is not tied to an IBM CPU key. Our software uses an internal customer key.
VIRTEL
Can I access Virtel from a Web portal?
Yes. You can use a simple URL from any Internet portal or browser to connect to Virtel to access an 3270 application (Web to Host, Host for Web, Host Web Services functionalities, etc.).
Can Virtel support an existing CFT/PCNE, Pelican/PCNE, or TOM/PCNE?
Yes. The retrieval procedure is done using the NPSICONV program that comes with SAMPLIB.
Are new IBM z/OS machines with a 64-bit processor compatible with Virtel?
Virtel works without any modification on 64-bit z/OS platforms. Applications continue to work as normal in 32-bit mode.
Does Virtel interface with any security tools?
Yes. Virtel can interface with RACF, TOP/SECRET, ACF2, and VIRTEL/SECURITY.
Which Virtel functions does our company have the rights to use?
Refer to your license, which lists the Virtel functions that you have the rights to use. From a technical perspective, Virtel is set up to allow any Virtel function to run (ARBOLOAD entity definition and VIRTCT parameters). If you would like to access new functionalities in Virtel, please contact a SysperTec sales representative to request it and learn how to use it.
Does Virtel support backup of outgoing calls on Transpac lines?
Yes, when Virtel detects an error on an outgoing call, it automatically switches to the backup line for the next call.
I have multiple Cisco routers. Can I set them up with one or more Virtel instances? How is that set up?
Yes, Virtel can communicate with multiple Cisco routers. Just define an XOT line for each router, specifying the router's IP address as the partner. Put Virtel's IP address in the line's "Our address" field. Each Virtel must have its own IP address, so VIPA addressing is required if there are multiple instances of Virtel on a single z/OS or OS/390.
VM55 transactions seem to take a long time to respond. Is that normal?
IThere is nothing wrong. The VM55 transaction is associated with a permanent task using the LU6.2 dialog between CICS and Virtel.
Does an operating system migration have any impact on Virtel?
No. The upgrade is transparent.
Does CICS transactional subsystem migration have any impact on Virtel?
No, the upgrade is transparent.
Virtel is not affected by the CICS change, unless you have developed scripts for Virtel to connect to the CICS for screens that might display differently.
Virkix
Are new IBM z/OS machines with a 64-bit processor compatible with Virkix?
Virkix works without any modification on 64-bit z/OS platforms. Applications continue to work as normal in 32-bit mode.
Is it normal to have a long response time with Virkix/STI APIW transactions?
Yes, the same session is reused for multiple transfers.
Does an operating system migration have any impact on Virkix?
Only the CICS level matters. Virkix (V2R4) comes with LOADLIBs for different CICS levels: CICS V4.10, CICS TS 1.X, or CICS TS 2.2.
Synapse
Are new IBM z/OS machines with a 64-bit processor compatible with Synapse Mainframe?
Synapse works without any modification on 64-bit z/OS platforms. Applications continue to work as normal in 32-bit mode.
Is it possible to see X25 use on the Synapse server to check the invoices we receive from France Telecom?
Yes.
All of the connections Synapse makes (small and medium-sized systems) are stored in the \\VirNT\Log directory. There is a monthly file for Minitel connections
(MM.YYY).
For Synapse Mainframe, the statistics are stored in the VSAM KSDS file. There are procedures available for daily extractions and archiving.
$D3$, $G1$, and $MQ transactions seem to stay in memory for a long time. Is this normal?
Yes. Every $D3$ transaction has to process the requests assigned to it. Depending on the settings or activity (session maintenance, sharing a PC LECAM resource, etc.), these transactions can stay in memory for a long time. The same is true for $G1$ and $MQ transactions.
Does an operating system migration have any impact on Synapse (mainframe version)?
Only the CICS level matters. Synapse V400 comes with two LOADLIBs for different CICS versions. One is compatible with CICS V4.10 and CICS TS 1.X, and the other is compatible with CICS TS 2.2.
